Spices

Different variations of this dessert have evolved over time by adding different flavors and toppings, these can range from such flavors as vanilla, spices, chocolate, pumpkin and numerous fruit flavors such as mango, lemon, fig and apricot.

Romans ate sweet and savoury dishes called Alita dolcia that were made from milk, flour, eggs and spices and were very similar to pancakes.

The 1381 recipe is the earliest known apple pie recipe in the world, and lists the ingredients as good apples, good spices, figs, raisins and pears.
